In Vitro Fertilization is commonly referred to as IVF. IVF is the process of fertilization by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. When the IVF procedure is successful, the process is combined with a procedure known as embryo transfer, which is used to physically place the embryo in the uterus.
At North Cyprus IVF Center, In Vitro Fertilization requires a five step program which includes:
1- The first step in treatment is a complete assessment of your unique fertility needs. For this end, fertility testing will be in order. For more information on testing, please see our “Testing” section. Once the testing stage is completed, an assessment will be made so that the right type of treatment can be selected and the precise dose of medication can be identified. Once this assessment is made, we will be able to prescribe your medication and prepare your custom treatment protocol accordingly.
2- The second step involves your preliminary work, which is, administering medication and monitoring in order to prepare for the actual treatment. During this period, you will be receiving hormone supplements in order to stimulate the ovaries so that multiple eggs can be obtained later on during egg harvesting.
3- Retrieving the eggs: Once the eggs are developed through the second step, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure which uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle through the pelvic cavity. Sedation and local anesthesia are provided to remove any discomfort that you might experience. The eggs are removed from the ovaries using the hollow needle, which is called follicular aspiration. The very same day, your partner’s semen sample is obtained through manual stimulation (masturbation). After the sperm has been processed, the next step will be fertilization.
4- Fertilizing eggs with sperm: We use the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) procedure for fertilization where the mature egg is held with a specialized pipette and a very delicate, sharp, and hollow needle is used to immobilize and pick up a good quality sperm. This needle is then carefully inserted through the shell of the egg and into the cytoplasm of the egg. The sperm is injected into the cytoplasm, and the needle is carefully removed. This procedure is different from standard IVF, where sperm and egg cells are placed in a dish to let fertilization occur naturally.
5- Embryo Transfer: The transfer process involves a speculum which is inserted into the vagina to expose the cervix. A predetermined number of embryos are suspended in fluid and gently placed through a catheter into the womb. This process is often guided by ultrasound. After embryo transfer, you will be required to take a beta-hCG blood test in order to detect pregnancy in blood.
